Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

It was another fantastic year at the Donald P. Sutherland School with many wonderful events and memories. I am very proud and appreciative of our students and staff for all of the effort they have placed into making our school community a great success.

During the month of May, we had several events that continued to show the strength and values of the DPS school community. We started the month with our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. This day was very well attended. It appeared that all of our visitors enjoyed the classroom activities as well as the refreshments sponsored by our PTO. We appreciate all of our visitors adhering to our visitor’s policy and understanding the need for a secure school community.

On May 18th, our entire student body had the opportunity to vote on the 2015-2016 school flag. The finalists were selected by our Character Education Committee. Congratulations to Korin Laurilla the winner of the contest. His flag will represent our school for the 2016-2017 school year.

This summer our school will once again go through many renovations. We will replace exterior brick walls in the front of the building as well as continue with various interior projects. Please be advised that students will receive their classroom placement letters during the third week of August along with all other information to start off our 2016-2017 school year.

Summer vacation affords our students opportunities to enrich their reading interests and expand important literacy skills. Throughout our current school year, a team of  D.P.S. teachers and I were motivated to develop a school-wide, incentive-based, summer reading program that assists students in maintaining reading fluency and comprehension skills, build confidence and avoid summer regression. Our building level program will be offered to encourage all students to read throughout July and August. Your child(ren) will receive their packet during the final week of school.

As the end of the school year winds down, I want to provide you with an outline of our end of the school year events.

  • June 13 – Summer Reading Assembly Sponsored by the Nassau Free Library
  • June 15 –  School Picnic/5th Grade Field Trip to Museum of Science
  • June 17 – ½ day of School with 11:30 dismissal
  • June 20 – Ice Cream Social
  • June 22 – Graduation for Grade 5 @ 10:00
  • June 23 – Last Day of School with dismissal @ 11:30. Report Cards go Home.

Before I close out this letter, I want to thank you for your continued support of our school. I look forward to working with you during the 2016-2017 school year.

Sincerely,
Jack Alvey
