Information about a Cold War veterans’ school tax exemption will be presented to the Board of Education at a special public hearing on Wednesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Administration Center. This hearing will immediately precede the regular Board meeting that evening.

Under consideration, is an exemption for veterans who served in active duty, other than training, in the Armed Forces between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 and were discharged or released under honorable conditions. This exemption was authorized by Governor Andrew Cuomo in August, and it is left to school districts to decide whether to approve or not.

The state does not provide revenue to offset the savings for veterans.

The Board of Education approved an alternative veterans’ tax exemption in January 2015 for veterans who served during a period of war, veterans who served in a combat zone, disabled veterans and Gold Star Parents, those whose child died in the line of duty while serving the United States armed forces during a war.

The public will have an opportunity to comment at the hearing.
