First graders at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School showed their Olympic spirit earlier this month by learning about the different winter sports and the countries represented.

Then the students took part in their own competition which included events such as the cotton ball toss, jumping jacks and sit-ups.

“All of our first graders seemed to enjoy being Olympians today,” said first grade teacher Karen Treiber. “We discussed how difficult it is to become an athlete and that not everyone can be an Olympian, but it is important to work hard and challenge yourself even when things are tough. The kids seemed to understand that they are able to use these same ideas when we are learning new things in the classroom.”
