Capital Project

The East Greenbush CSD has proposed a $116 million capital project that, if approved by voters, would improve facilities and grounds at all seven schools at no additional cost to the local taxpayer. The proposed capital project will be a proposition on the School Budget Vote and Board Election ballot scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Front of DPSDear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Our students have smoothly transitioned back into their school routines. I hope all of the new members to our school community have had a positive start to their Donald P. Sutherland School experience.

We have already begun our school year with events that have set a nice tone for another quality school year. Our PTO sponsored Welcome Back Picnic was a great opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy a meal together. The weather was beautiful! I want to thank our PTO for organizing the event as well as all of the volunteers that assisted with set-up, clean-up, cooking, and bringing side dishes.

I want to thank everyone that attended our annual open house. The DPS staff recognizes the importance and value of providing our student’s families with an academic overview as well as the expectations and routines for the grade level your children are in. Additionally, please take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the EGCSD Attendance Policy as well as our Code of Conduct and visitation procedures. Our RAPTOR visitor badge system is in full use. You will need to provide proper identification one time in order to receive a badge to head beyond the main office.

Our opening character education assembly went very well. During the assembly, our fifth grade students presented our character trait of the month “Respect”. At the end of the assembly, we unveiled our school flag for the 2018-2019 school year that was designed by now fourth grader Jack Kelley. The flag is displayed in the gymnasium and cafeteria.

We hosted a Board of Education meeting on October 3rd and shared with the school district community our backpack food program. Our Backpack committee provided information to the Board of Education regarding the process we utilized to create the program and the number of families that we were able to support at the end of the last school year. We will begin this year’s program towards the end of October or early November. I want to thank our school community for their participation in our Harvest Festival Collection for the food pantry for our Backpack Program. It was a great success!

Our first School Evacuation Drill will take place on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at approximately 9:45 AM. During the drill we will load all students by grade level, with their teachers, onto District school buses and transport them to Genet Elementary School. We will unload the buses and head to the auditorium. Attendance will be taken and we will practice our reunification process. The buses will then depart Genet and return to DPS where students will disembark and continue with their school day. During the Evacuation Drill, there will be no pick up or drop off of students.

The month of October will conclude on Wednesday, October 31st, with our annual Halloween parade. Our goal is to have our parade outside with a parade through the Village of Nassau. Our secondary plan will be to have the parade in our parking lot. We are requesting that you continue to support our efforts to celebrate Halloween with non-violent costumes. Students will not be allowed to carry swords, axes, guns, or other toy weapons. Masks that block a student’s view or display blood or other frightening images are strongly discouraged. Use your imagination!

Here are some of our October events that you may want to place on your calendar:

  • October 10: 5th Grade Field Trip to Thatcher Park
  • October 10: Title 1 Parent Meeting (Library @ 6:00 p.m.)
  • October 12: Character Education Assembly @ 2:15 p.m.
  • October 18: Picture Day
  • October 19: ½ Day of School (PD Day for Staff)
  • October 23: Relocation Drill to Genet @ 9:30 a.m.

Please visit our school website at www.egcsd.org/donald-p-sutherland-elementary-school. We will continue to update the website throughout the school year and place important information for your viewing as well as send documents through School Messenger.

Enjoy the month!

Sincerely,

Mr. Alvey
