Student artwork at the MLK Art Exhibit at Siena CollegeStudents from Columbia High School and Howard L. Goff Middle School attended the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Art and Writing Invitational reception at Siena College on January 11.

Each year, the art invitational has a theme based upon a quote that relates to Dr. King’s vision. This year’s quote came from poet Maya Angelou: “I sustain myself with the love of family.”

The students were inspired by the cut, black paper silhouettes of artist, Kara Walker. Students researched a human rights, animal rights or environmental problem of their choice and then illustrated the solution to that problem in an effort to raise awareness in the community. Student work selected for the exhibit portrayed themes of peace, justice, compassion, diversity and freedom.

Congratulations to our students who participated in this event!
