Group Walks in Colleague’s Memory
Goff Middle School staff participated in the 14th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October18 in memory of the school’s secretary, Barbara Lehmann. The group joined 12,000 other walkers in Albany’s Washington Park to honor Lehmann, who passed away on the first day of school after fighting a courageous, 10 year battle with cancer. She was a positive force in the school and a great friend to all in the building and in the district.
Members of the Goff Middle School community walked in her memory by wearing black and pink shirts with “Barb Lehmann – Forever in our hearts” printed on the back. The group sold 57 shirts so together they could wear the shirts as a staff to keep her memory alive in the building. Local businesses such as Chez Mike’s in the Hannaford Plaza also donated money to the cause. (Click here to read complete story)
Nancy Cassidy, a teacher and the co-organizer of the event at Goff said, “This was a great way to channel our sadness into a positive. Everyone helped in their own way. Goff stood together; whether it was giving or collecting donations, providing encouragement, buying and wearing t-shirts or simply walking. I’m so proud of our community’s response. Barb was our co-worker and friend and the school community really pulled together to honor her memory.”
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s premier event to increase awareness and raise funds to fight breast cancer. It’s more than the name of a walk – it’s also an opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors and educated women about breast cancer prevention and early detection.
The Goff Middle School Team easily surpassed its goal of raising $5,000 for the American Cancer Society by collecting $5,529 in donations. By doing so, the team finished as the eighth best fundraising team in the Capital Region.
The school would like to give special thanks to those individuals and businesses that supported the cause. A special thanks goes to Nancy Cassidy and her co-chair, Natalia Multunas for coordinating efforts for Goff.
Since 1993, nearly five million walkers across the country have raised more than $340 million through Making Strides events to help fight breast cancer.
