Spring 2009
Good nutrition is year round, but summer weather presents some careful thought. Soaring temperatures remind us to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Refrigerated foods can reach room temperature and higher in less than an hour during warm weather—temperatures where microorganisms thrive.
Here are a few food safety tips:
- Take groceries straight home from the market
- Thaw foods in the refrigerator
- Food that will sit out for a buffet or picnic, should be served in dishes sitting on an ice bed
- Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of meat on the grill
- Wash your hands often before and after handling food
- Disinfect sponges in a chlorine bleach solution often
Remember the longer hot humid days of summer can increase your bodies fluid needs. Be careful about what you are drinking to quench your thirst. If you drink soda, sweetened teas or fruit drinks, you could be consuming hundreds of calories a day without knowing it. Water is your best choice for hydration.
Summer is the best time for local produce. You can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in nutrients and fiber and low in calories and sodium. Be adventurous and try some new foods.
Have a great summer!
