Athletic Director Michael Leonard speaks to student athletes and their families at Meet the Coaches Night.

Student athletes participating in fall interscholastic sports and their families attended Meet the Coaches Night on Monday at Columbia High School. They heard from Athletic Director Michael Leonard, Superintendent Jeff Simons and Athletic Trainer Sean Leggett before breaking into smaller team meetings with coaches.

Mr. Leonard introduced the coaching staff and noted highlights from the 2015-16 school year, including the Girls Bowling state championship, 23 of 24 programs earning Scholar Athlete Team Awards for having team GPAs above 90 and the District winning its fourth consecutive state sportsmanship award.

“This is a huge award, so everyone in this room should be very proud of this,” Mr. Leonard said.

As a former high school football player, Mr. Simons talked about how his own experiences in athletics have prepared him for success both personally and professionally. He thanked the parents for their support and wished the student athletes well as their seasons begin.

“What you are being provided this fall through sports is an opportunity to find the best within yourselves and to bring out the best in your teammates,” he said. “And believe me, you will build memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Meet the Coaches Night was preceded by a sold-out Welcome Back BBQ that benefited the All Sports Club.
