Students in Jennifer DeLancey’s first grade class at Red Mill rang in the new year on December 23 with a morning full of ELA and math activities. Gathered on a rug and wearing party hats, students took turns re-arranging the letters from the phrase “Happy New Year” on the smart board to create new words such as “are” and “wrap.”

Red Mill new years2Other activities included:

  • “Out with the old, in with the new” antonym sentences
  • “Countdown to noon” cause and effect readying strategy
  • Math addition sorting
  • Learning how to tell time to the hour and then matching digital and analog clocks
  • Writing a “New Year’s Goal” for the next few months in first grade

When the clock struck noon, the class enjoyed a few snacks and had a brief dance party.
