Two Columbia High School varsity football players were diagnosed with Coxsackie virus, commonly known as Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, earlier this week. They have been evaluated by their family physicians and cleared to participate in athletics because they were determined to no longer be contagious.
East Greenbush Central School District administrators, in consultation with the school district’s appointed medical director, have determined that tonight’s game against Amsterdam will be played as scheduled.
Columbia’s Athletic Director Michael Leonard notified his counterpart at Amsterdam about the issue on Friday afternoon.
As a precaution, all team pads and equipment will be disinfected prior to tonight’s game. Following the game, all equipment and uniforms will be cleaned and disinfected.
