Barb Schielke assembles turkey dinners for local families

Bell Top teacher Barb Schielke, along with her children, assembles Thanksgiving dinner baskets for local families.

The East Greenbush Teachers Association is helping to provide local families with a Thanksgiving meal by partnering with the Greenbush YMCA and its Caring Community Basket Brigade.

On Friday, the EGTA donated a $450 Hannaford gift card to the Greenbush YMCA so it could purchase items for Thanksgiving dinner baskets and distribute them to needy families. On Saturday, a group of teachers volunteered to assemble and deliver the baskets.

“In partnering with the YMCA on this initiative, this is another example of our commitment to the students and families within our school community,” said EGTA President and Columbia Social Studies Teacher Drew Romanowski. “We proudly serve and help make a difference inside and outside of the classroom.”

The Thanksgiving baskets will provide dinner with all the trimmings to 125 families who may not have had one otherwise.

“We could not have accomplished this goal without the support of many donors and volunteers, including the East Greenbush Teachers Association,” said YMCA District Executive Director Shannon Romanowski who oversees the Greenbush and Troy branches. “We are so grateful for all the EGTA has done to help with our Thanksgiving Basket Brigade initiative.”
