During Genet Elementary School’s Veterans Day assembly last month, Superintendent Jeff Simons challenged students in the audience to think about why Veterans Day is an important day to celebrate and to express those thoughts in essays and send them to him.

A few weeks later, a stack of essays were delivered to Mr. Simons with heartfelt sentiments. Excerpts included:

“Veterans Day is important because it is a chance to thank our veterans for fighting for our nation.”

“My dad is a veteran and he is a superhero because he saved people.”

“Veterans are so important because we could not have half the things we have without freedom.”

As a thank you, Mr. Simons hosted a pizza party for those students on Friday afternoon and gave each student a certificate. The group enjoyed lunch together and talked about the Veterans Day essays.
