The Rensselaer County Health Department has given approval for schools to start winter sports, following the state’s announcement from last Friday that “higher-risk” winter sports could begin starting February 1.

East Greenbush Central School District is starting a preliminary registration for students as a way to determine interest in the following sports:

  • Boys’ Basketball (Varsity and JV)
  • Girls’ Basketball (Varsity and JV)
  • Competitive Cheer (Varsity and JV)
  • Ice Hockey (Varsity – pending other schools’ participation)
  • Indoor Track (Varsity)

The district is still taking under consideration opportunities for wrestling and weighing options, but is not registering student athletes for wrestling at this time.

Schools within the Capital Region are impacted by decisions made by their respective counties thus our school district is working with other districts to determine what viable options for league structure and playing of interscholastic sports are possible.

The Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, February 2 to discuss winter sports. The district has also scheduled a Coaches Meeting for Monday evening and a Student Athlete/Parent Virtual Meeting for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
