Students enrolled in summer school will no longer be required to wear face masks during classes, according to updated guidance released by the New York State Department of Health on Wednesday afternoon.

“Given current low rates of COVID-19 transmission, schools/district[s] may decide to implement revised masking policies consistent with those available [to summer camps],” the state department of health said.

Schools and school districts have the option of following interim summer camp guidance that was updated on Wednesday.

While masks are no longer required to be worn by students in classrooms, they are still “strongly encouraged” by the state health department. Additionally, the revised state guidelines require unvaccinated children, which currently includes all students under 12, continue wearing face coverings on buses and when moving inside school. Unvaccinated staff must continue to wear a face covering “at all times” while indoors.

“We reviewed the new guidance, consulted with the Questar Health and Safety Department and other school districts and determined we are able to modify mask requirements,” said Superintendent Jeff Simons.

This updated guidance only applies to Summer School. The state plans to send school districts new guidance for the 2021-22 school year later this summer.

Key Points to Updated Guidance for Summer School

Bus Travel

  • Masks must be worn on buses by both vaccinated and unvaccinated students and staff.

Daily Screening/Reporting

  • Daily screening for students should continue.
  • Daily reporting to the COVID-19 Report Card Dashboard is no longer required.

Safety Protocols

  • The 6-foot social distancing guidance should be continued whenever possible.
  • Other safety protocols are recommended to continue as currently implemented (cleaning, etc.).

Outside on School Property

  • Masks are not required to be worn outside on school property by either vaccinated or unvaccinated students and staff.

Inside School Buildings

  • Masks must be worn by vaccinated and unvaccinated staff and students whenever moving inside of buildings – adults should model for our school community.
  • Masks may be removed by students and fully vaccinated staff once seated in the classroom in group or cohort settings.
  • Vaccinated staff not in direct contact with students may choose not to wear a mask inside.
