Columbia students in the Science National Honor Society teaching a lesson on forces at Red Mill Elementary School.

Columbia High School students in the Science National Honor Society visited each elementary school this month to teach a lesson about forces associated with airplanes. The high schoolers used diagrams of airplanes to show the forces on an airplane – lift, thrust, drag and gravity – that allow it to fly through the air. Then they assisted the elementary students in building their own airplanes and brought them outside to fly them.

The lessons were taught as part of the Science National Honor Society required community service. The SNHS members have also promoted community events such as Brain Awareness Week and Vascular Health Day, they have organized fundraisers to promote environmental cleanup efforts and used club funds to sponsor students attending science activities for free.

The Science National Honor Society students developed the idea for the lesson together and practiced with each other before visiting the elementary schools. The participating members were:
