The Goff Middle School Science Olympiad team placed 3rd overall at the New York State Finals this past weekend in Syracuse, earning medals in 16 out of the 23 events, half of which were in the top 5 in the state. Goff qualified for the state tournament by placing 2nd at the regional competition on February 12.
Approximately 200 teams competed at the regional level and 40 teams qualified to compete at the state competition. Medals were awarded for the top 10 students in each event. A combined score of all the events is tallied for the final ranking.
“This was an absolutely amazing accomplishment by this team,” said Goff Science Olympiad Head Coach Donnamarive Vlieg. “We went into the competition with very little expectations. This year was like starting from scratch since COVID decimated our seasons for the past two years. Being able to bounce back and reach such a high level of achievement is a testament to all the hard work the coaches and the team put in this year.”
