Students hold up books at the Bell Top Book Club assembly

Every student at Bell Top Elementary School received their very own copy of “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” on Friday as part of the Bell Top Book Club.

Bell Top students gathered in the school gym on Friday morning to find out which title would be selected for the 7th annual Bell Top Book Club. Following an introduction about the school-wide book program, teachers Sarah Lussier and Tracy Cornell announced that the school would be reading “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin. This Newberry Honor and New York Times bestseller is a unique blend of fantasy, sci-fi, and Chinese fairy tale. As an added bonus, there are also beautiful, full-color illustrations sprinkled throughout.

Every student in grades K-5 received their very own copy of the book during the brief assembly. Over the next four weeks, classes will read the book together and answer daily trivia questions to try and win prizes.

An ending celebration has been planned and will involve a “Vocabulary Parade” where students will dress up to show the meanings of new words.

“At its heart, Bell Top Book Cllub is about bringing the school community together through the shared experience of reading and discussing a wonderful story,” said Mrs. Cornell. “Books chosen are always rich in powerful lifelong lessons and themes!”

Special thanks to the Bell Top PTO for once again supporting this program!

About the Book (from the author’s website)
In the valley of Fruitless mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man of the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life’s questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man of the Moon to ask him how she can change her family’s fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.

This is a wonderous novel with an epic journey and memorable characters in the tradition of The Wizard of Oz. From the beautiful design and the breathtaking full-color illustrations throughout, to the gentle humor and touching prose, this book is truly a gem.
