The Columbia SADD Club appeared at East Greenbush Town Hall recently to show support for a local law prohibiting tobacco and cannabis use on town property including parks. The town board passed the law which will protect residents from exposure to secondhand smoke, secondhand aerosols from vaping devices and the byproducts of smokeless tobacco.

The SADD Club presented the town board with a signed banner thanking them for creating a healthier environment.

“I think it is important for our parks to stay tobacco and vape free,” Kelsey Reagan ’24, a SADD Club member, told the board. “My family and I love hiking together, and the exposure to these toxins in cigarettes and vapes can be harmful to everyone’s health, but especially those with underlying conditions and asthma. Especially during covid and with summer coming up, keeping the parks clean while everyone is outside is vital.”

The SADD Club has partnered with Capital District Tobacco-Free Communities to inform students about the dangers of tobacco use through school programs and events.
