The East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education will host a public hearing for a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Property Tax Exemption on Monday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Central Administration Board Room at 29 Englewood Avenue, East Greenbush, NY 12061.

Residents are invited to attend the meeting and comment on the proposed tax exemption.

The board expressed its support for the tax exemption during its public meeting on Wednesday evening, which would provide a 10% property tax exemption of assessed value for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers. It could also include other benefits including a property tax exemption permanency after 20 years of service and a line-of-duty death benefit for a surviving spouse.

The tax exemption was made available through state legislation that was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on December 9, 2022.

In accordance with the state legislation, a school district must conduct a public hearing and its board of education must adopt a resolution opting into the property tax exemption. The deadline to adopt the resolution is March 1, 2023.
