The East Greenbush Central School District Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Property Tax Exemption at a public meeting on Monday evening. The board voted following public comments at the meeting.

The tax exemption will provide a 10% property tax exemption of assessed value for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers with at least two years of service. The property tax exemption becomes permanent after 20 years of service.

Additionally, the exemption will continue for the surviving spouse of a volunteer who is killed in the line of duty with five years of service.

The resolution shall take effect immediately for the 2023-24 school tax year.

The tax exemption was made available through state legislation that was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on December 9, 2022.
