EDITOR’S NOTE: Since this story was published, the total donation amount has increased to $69,589.07.

Columbia Kicks Cancer led by Julia Harbour ’23 and Rachel Ostiguy ’23 won the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign last month by raising $69,589.07. The money will be donated to LLS for blood cancer treatment and care.

This marks the third year in a row that Columbia students have raised money for LLS.

Ms. Harbour and Ms. Ostiguy led a team of other students and their parents to organize fundraisers such as gift card raffles, Dine to Donate events at local restaurants and a Parents Night Out that enabled parents to drop their kids at Columbia for babysitting.

The Columbia Kicks Cancer team was recognized at a gala hosted by the LLS on March 23.

“It was a rewarding feeling,” said Ms. Ostiguy who plans to work in a health-related field. “It just felt really good to help other people.”

The students said it was a positive experience to lead a fundraising campaign for an important cause, both as they formulate career plans and as they view the world around them.

“It was great to see all of the community come together,” said Ms. Harbour who wants to be a pediatric oncologist. “It was an eye opening experience.”

The students said they plan on helping the Columbia Kicks Cancer team next year.

Congratulations!
