Columbia High School Participation in Government classes hosted their Legislative Lobby Day on May 23 in the school auditorium with students presenting their bills to classmates. Projects included ones specific to the East Greenbush Central School District, such as adding American Sign Language to elementary schools, and state laws such as a tax on junk food.
The winning project, voted on by students, was a Pothole Prevention Plan. It was presented by Sophia Cunningham ’24 and Caitlin Weinheimer ’24.
“The girls were unsure of their idea but really viewed it as a problem in their community that needed to be fixed,” said Participation in Government Teacher Kelley Sheraw. “They emailed the state, interviewed the town supervisor and spoke with the business involved. They learned a great deal about government through this project.”
During the Legislative Lobby Day, students had the opportunity to hear from Town of East Greenbush Supervisor Jack Conway and New York State Senator Jake Ashby on the topic of participation in government.
