Green Meadow Elementary School hosted author and illustrator Meghan McCarthy on May 23 to discuss books, writing, drawing and the publishing process. She spoke to all students in three different presentations in the school gym.
Ms. McCarthy writes nonfiction children’s books about topics such as firefighting, Seabiscuit the racehorse, and the 1904 Olympic Marathon.
“Having an author/illustrator who primarily creates nonfiction was a unique experience for us,” said Green Meadow Librarian Laura Wladarczyk. “As the librarian, I appreciated her focus on research and making sure her stories were true to the event while making her books appealing to our younger audience.”
During the visit, Ms. McCarthy talked about her life, how she became a writer and illustrator, and how her stories go from an idea to a published book available for children to read.
“Our students were very interested to hear how Meghan McCarthy became a children’s book author and illustrator,” said Mrs. Wladarczyk. “They were inspired most by true stories from her childhood showing the importance of never giving up when working toward a goal.”
At the end of each presentation, students were called on to contribute to a drawing that Ms. McCarthy started.
Special thanks to the Green Meadow PTO for sponsoring this event!
