A student working in a group in Mr. Barnes' 8th Grade Social Studies class
Visit our Facebook page to see inside the classroom of 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher Mike Barnes. On Monday, his students learned about appalling working conditions in the meat-packing industry in the early 20th century by reading about “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. His description of diseased, rotten, and contaminated meat shocked the public and led to new federal food safety laws.

Students worked in small groups or on their own to answer questions in a worksheet. Toward the end of the class, Mr. Barnes led a class discussion of what students had learned through the reading.

Inside the Classroom will be a regular feature on our website and Facebook page in which we highlight the learning that goes on in our classrooms.
