The amazing art program at Green Meadow Elementary School was on full display at the public Board of Education meeting on Wednesday evening in the school gymnasium. Art Teacher Karli Powers provided an overview of what students are learning in the art classroom and some of the projects they have been working on, but also, the values she reinforces such as positivity, working hard, resilience, effective communication, and developing a love for creating.
“Creating means more than just using art tools and marking making,” she said during the presentation. “What I strive to do when I’m planning is to instill a love for creating and harnessing the power of critical thinking. Take what they are learning about in the classrooms and applying it in a project-based setting.”
Mrs. Powers showed how she is implementing the district’s new Portrait of a Graduate into her curriculum. For example, 2nd grade students made “I CAN Pencils” to teach the Portrait of a Graduate skill of Confident Learner. They started by reading the book “I Cannot Draw a Horse” by Charise Mericle Harper where the message is how an artist can persevere and create something from a nothing shape. Students learned to problem solve and keep moving forward.
At the end of the presentation, Mrs. Powers played an inspiring video that featured student voices and how much they love going to art.
