Columbia’s Sophomore Class hosted a “Parents’ Night Out” on Saturday evening where high school student volunteers watched elementary aged kids, while the parents were able to go out and enjoy a kid-free night. The event was open to all K-5 children.

The children were able to choose from playing games in the gym, doing arts and crafts projects, playing board games, or participating in science experiments put on by Columbia’s Science Honor Society. Some of the activities in the gym included kickball, line soccer, and dodgeball. For Arts and Crafts, the children were able to make flashlight pictures, globe lights, heart ornaments, unicorn crowns, and Roly Polys.

The big attractions at the Science Experiment station were make-your-own slime and lava lamps. The Board Game station offered a quiet, relaxing area where the kids could play cards, board games, and draw and color.

Pizza was served for dinner in the cafeteria and the night ended in the auditorium with a viewing of The Super Mario Brothers Movie in the auditorium.

“This is one of our favorite fundraisers that we do each year,” said Scott Monuteaux, a high school math teacher and co-advisor of the sophomore class. “The kids love interacting with the high school student volunteers, and at the same time, it is a great way for our high school students to give back to the community. The kids all seemed to enjoy the night, and were having fun with the different activities that were offered. Moreover, the parents were very appreciative for the opportunity to have a kid-free night.”

Special thanks to the Columbia student volunteers!
