Sixth grade students in the Career Readiness class at Howard L. Goff Middle School met with guest speakers on Wednesday to learn more about different careers. The guest speakers are parents in the district and included the following careers:
- Attorney
- Banking
- Communications
- Construction/Architecture
- Correctional Officer
- Cybersecurity
- Engineer
- Information Technology
- Mental Health
- Nursing
- Pharmacist
- Police Officer
- Teacher
- Veterinary Technician
Students rotated around the classroom every five minutes so they could learn about each of the professions and ask questions.
Students prepared for the activity by exploring their own strengths and interests while finding a career path that best suits them. They spent a week in the library researching a career of interest (job description, work environment, qualifications/training, salary and benefits, as well as the job outlook) and shared their findings with the class.
“Having parents come into our classroom to share about their career and present the students with various career options was the perfect culminating activity for their 10-week Career Readiness Class,” said Goff Career Readiness Teacher Heather O’Keefe.
Career Readiness is a new class for 6th grade students this year. The focus of the class is to provide professional skills such as organization, critical thinking and teamwork, as well as, digital citizenship, character education, and college and career readiness. It also aligns with the Board of Education goal of providing a Future Driven Education.
Special thanks to our guest speakers!
