Studio Art students at Columbia High School learned from award-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist Ira Marcks during a recent set of workshops. Mr. Marcks visited each of the eight Studio Art classes and taught the first session on October 23 and 24 and a second session on October 30 and 31.
Students learned about cartooning and specific techniques such as squash and stretch, inking and hatching.
Mr. Marcks would present a technique at the front of the class and then students would practice sketching at their tables. Mr. Marcks walked around the room assisting students, along with the art teacher.
“The workshops were so well received by our students,” said Columbia Art Teacher Andrea Neiman. “They were hands-on and gave the students a sense of the work of a cartoonist.”
The workshops were made possible by a grant awarded to Mr. Marcks.
