Green Meadow Elementary School honored a World War II and Korean War veteran during its Veterans Day assembly on Friday morning in the school gymnasium. The American flag that had been flying at the school was folded by members of the Castleton Memorial VFW Post #7337 during the assembly, placed in a decorative display case and then presented to Bill Scharoun.
Mr. Scharoun, who is the great-great uncle of current Green Meadow and Goff students is a Navy veteran who served on the USS Osmus (WWII) and USS Leary (Korean War). Later in life, he volunteered as a guide on the USS Slater museum in Albany.
Mr. Scharoun attended the Veterans Day assembly with his family and was surprised with the flag dedication.
