Veterans Day ceremony

Green Meadow students present information about the branches of the military during their Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, November 8.

East Greenbush Central School District elementary schools hosted Veterans Day celebrations this week to recognize those who have served in the United States of America military. Veterans related to students were invited to breakfasts, assemblies, parades and other special events. It was an opportunity to thank veterans for their service and educate students about the holiday and values such as courage, honor and sacrifice.

The Green Meadow assembly featured a special ceremony in which a 102-year-old veteran of World War II and the Korean War was given the American flag that had been flying in front of the school. The Castleton Memorial VFW Post #7337 folded the flag and then it was placed in a decorative display case and presented to Bill Scharoun, who is the great-great uncle of current Green Meadow and Goff students. Mr. Scharoun, a Navy veteran, served on the USS Osmus (WWII) and USS Leary (Korean War). Later in life, he volunteered as a guide on the USS Slater museum in Albany.

All schools will be closed on Monday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. However, teachers and students will be volunteering that day as they rake leaves for local veterans. That annual event is organized by the East Greenbush Teachers Association.
