Red Mill Elementary School presented its Character Education program at the public Board of Education meeting on Wednesday evening. Principal Helen Squillace introduced the program and then played a video to highlight all of the positive traits students learn at school such as Respectful, Responsible and Honesty.
Character Education is taught through the daily Red Mill News morning announcements, projects such as decorating the front display case, developing presentations for Character Education assemblies, and recognizing Kids of Character who exemplify these traits.
There are 14 teachers and staff on the Red Mill Character Education Committee who plan out the program.
“At Red Mill, we go beyond academics in creating a student who is ready for the world,” Mrs. Squillace said during the presentation. “We look at the whole child. We look at their social emotional development, how they interact with one another, and the type of skills they can bring in their futures to their careers and their relationships.”
A second video was played at the board meeting which described the East Greenbush CSD Portrait of a Graduate skills – Confident Learner, Effective Communicator, Adaptable, Empathetic and Critical Thinker – why they are important, and how they are being highlighted through the Character Education program.
Special thanks to the Red Mill teachers and staff who support these programs and to Library Media Specialist Liz Griffin who produced the videos!
