DPS hosted a virtual author visit with Cherry Mo, author of Home in a Lunchbox.
Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School Librarian Peg O’ Connor hosted a virtual visit with author and illustrator Cherry Mo on Friday morning for students in grades K-5. The students had recently read her book Home in a Lunchbox, as part of their “Mock Caldecott” activity, where students read and vote on recently published children’s books they think should win the Caldecott award. The story which is mostly illustrated follows a young girl who immigrates from Hong Kong to the U.S. and struggles to assimilate into American culture. Inspired by Mo’s own life, the book tells a story through beautifully drawn illustrations.
During the visit, Mo read the story to the students and spoke about the importance of embracing different cultures. She talked to the students about her process of creating a story and how different colors in her illustrations show the characters’ feelings.
“We were so thrilled to be able to have Cherry Mo visit with us and talk about her debut book. Students were spellbound as she shared her story, her language and her drawing talent,” said Mrs. O’Connor.
