The Be The Change Club at Howard L. Goff Middle School has organized at school-wide activity to showcase the uniqueness and diversity of its student body. The initiative called “Identity Tile,” invites every student, teacher, and staff member to decorate a wooden tile that represents them as a person. After the tiles are collected they will be displayed in the main hallway to spell out an inspiring message for everyone to see.
“It really gets you working and help everyone,” said sixth grade student Abdulbarr Olagunju, who helped organize the project. When asked what he hoped fellow students and staff take away form the project he said, “That everyone is the same, but unique in different ways.”
Be The Change Club Advisor Mrs. Rachel Mathis was impressed by how the students took charge of the project. They got permission from Mr. McHugh, researched how much the project would cost, discussed materials that would be needed, and promoted the project on the morning announcements. “I’m really proud of how the students came together in the club to do all of the work to make this project happen. Deputy Gravelle and I just had to support them. They did all of the work to make this happen,” said Mrs. Mathis.
The tiles will be on display in the main hallway in February.
