Dear Families,
The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for parts of the Capital Region including Rensselaer County. The current weather forecast shows temperatures below freezing all week with the wind chill making it feel even colder.
The National Weather Service begins to issue ADVISORIES when wind chills of -15°F are predicted and WARNINGS when wind chills of -25°F are predicted (see Wind Chill Index below).
- Wind-chills of -25°F can cause frostbite on exposed skin in about 30 minutes
- Wind-chills of -40°F can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes
- Ranges of -25°F to -40°F coupled with factors such as long walking distances, delayed wait times and bus delays can be dangerous. This information can be used to assist districts in making decisions about modification of outside activities or school closure.
- Frostbite can occur in children even before temperatures and wind chills dip into these extreme numbers due to smaller body size and weight.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our students, we are implementing the following measures:
- Communication with Staff: We have informed all teachers and staff of the Cold Weather Advisory and shared guidelines for cold weather safety with them.
- Recess: Recess will be held indoors during extremely cold periods. Students go outside for recess when the temperature with wind chill is 20 degrees or higher.
- GCC: All GCC activities will be held indoors this week.
- Ski Club: Ski Club is canceled for Wednesday, January 22. A replacement date will be added to the schedule.
Please ensure your child is dressed warmly for the bus ride to and from school:
- Hat: A warm hat that covers the ears
- Gloves or mittens: Waterproof gloves or mittens
- Scarf or neck gaiter: To protect the neck and face
- Warm socks and boots: Waterproof boots with good traction
In the event that any families are in need of winter clothing items, please contact your school principal.
Please monitor the weather forecast and adjust your child’s clothing accordingly. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and may adjust our plans as needed.
Thank you for your support!
