Red Cross visit to DPS

Students in Shondra Conyers’ kindergarten class at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School presented a check to the American Red Cross on Tuesday totaling $3,400 for Los Angeles wildfire disaster relief.

Students in Shondra Conyers’ kindergarten class at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School raised $3,400 for Los Angeles wildfire relief by reading hundreds of books. The students read 328 books between January 20-February 7, and collected money through pledges and donations.

The class presented a check to the American Red Cross on Tuesday morning. During the visit, students met the Red Cross’ mascot Pedro the Penguin and learned about fire safety.

Mrs. Conyers said the class goal was to raise $1,000 for the American Red Cross. They more than tripled that figure.

“I am so proud of the kids,” said Mrs. Conyers. “Not only did they embrace the joy of reading but they contributed to such an important cause and showed love and support for people they don’t know.”
