News Channel 13 Meteorologist Reid Kisselback speaking to students at Howard L. Goff Middle School on Thursday, March 6.
Sixth grade students at Howard L. Goff Middle School learned about weather forecasting from News Channel 13 Meteorologist Reid Kisselback on Thursday morning. Mr. Kisselback shared his career experience with the students during a presentation in the cafeteria, including his job duties, the skills needed in his profession, and what working in broadcasting is like.
Mr. Kisselback has been a meteorologist for seven years, working at news stations in Utica and now Albany.
“It was an awesome opportunity to have Reid come and share with the students what it is like to be a broadcast meteorologist!” said Goff Science Teacher Courtney Brewer. “The kids are genuinely curious about what careers you could pursue with the knowledge they learn in class, and after watching many forecasts in class it is really meaningful to have a local celebrity take the time to come in and be with them.”
During the presentation, Mr. Kisselback showed the students photos from his news station, answered questions, and even signed autographs.
“I really liked that Reid showed how much work goes into making a forecast and what his job is!,” said 6th grade student Abby Benson.
Prior to the visit, students competed in a Forecast Challenge in which they created a 5-day forecast using a variety of weather models and websites to compile data. After exploring the data, students had to decide how they would combine multiple forecasts to create their own and forecast the high and low temperatures and expected precipitation to the nearest tenth of an inch. Among the 93 students who competed, four students were named winners, including Miraya Patel, Harrison James, John Radzyminski, and Davis Biehler!
Special thanks to Reid Kisselback for visiting Goff Middle School!
