Students from the Donald P. Sutherland and Red Mill Elementary School Communication Skills classes went on a field trip to the sensory gym Bring on the Spectrum on Tuesday. Students climbed structures, went down slides and played sensory games on equipment designed for neurodiverse and neurotypical children.
Each Communications Skills class has 12 students with one teacher and two teaching assistants. The curriculum focuses on building functional life and communication skills.
“This was an opportunity for our kids to get into the community and enjoy a space that is built just for them,” said DPS Special Education Teacher Abigail Kissane. “Students worked on skills such as handling changes in routine, trying new things, gross motor movement and sensory regulation. They also practiced social skills by meeting new friends, and had to share and take turns on the equipment.”
