The Columbia High School Mock Trial team was recognized at the Rensselaer County Courthouse on Thursday morning for its successful season which included a county championship. The team advanced to the Regional competition and made it to the second round.
“I am very proud of the students for their hard work and ability to engage in this challenging competition,” said Mock Trial Advisor Stephen Lapolla.
The New York State High School Mock Trial Program is a joint venture of the New York Bar Foundation, the New York State Bar Association, and the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program.
Students who participate in Mock Trial have the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures. They learn ethics, civility and professionalism; understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system; life skills such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning; and an appreciation for academic studies and stimulated interest in law-related careers.
