The Columbia Boys’ Tennis Team won its first ever Section 2 Championship on Wednesday, defeating Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 4-3 at Shaker High School.
Columbia won both of its doubles matches – Iggy Lopez/Barron Melino 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and Aadit Akula/Aiden Oates 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) – and two singles matches – Aiden Cohen 6-1, 6-0 and Matthew Milanese 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 – to secure the victory.
“It has been amazing,” Columbia coach David Greene told the Times Union after the victory. “This is a tremendously fine group of guys. I’m so proud of them.”
Columbia has played on the road this season as its home tennis courts are being replaced as part of a capital project. Despite that, the Blue Devils went into the match as the No. 1 seed in the tournament, earning a bye in the quarterfinals and then beating Averill Park 6-1 in the semifinals. The new courts are scheduled to open in the fall and will be home to champions.
Congratulations!
