Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School hosted its 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony on Thursday morning in the school gym. With families and staff seated in the audience, the 5th graders processed into the gym wearing blue caps with gold tassels. They walked across a stage and received certificates which signified the end of elementary school and a new beginning at Howard L. Goff Middle School.
Principal Jack Alvey led the ceremony, and along with fifth grade teachers Mrs. Susan D’Amico and Mrs. Jennifer Reddy, congratulated the students on completing elementary school.
“I want to remind you of something very important that we talked about all year long, and that was our school theme of taking a chance,” Mr. Alvey told the students. “Remember how we encouraged you to try that new activity. Participate even if you weren’t 100 percent sure of an answer in class or to make a new friend – that’s what taking a chance is all about. It means stepping out of your comfort zone, embracing new challenges and being open to experiences that might seem a little daunting at first. Middle school is going to present you with some of these challenges … don’t be afraid to try.”
“And the most important thing is enjoy being a kid,” Mr. Alvey concluded. “Congratulations!”
Following the ceremony, students and families enjoyed refreshments provided by the PTO.
Congratulations!
