Visit our Facebook page to see inside the classroom of Columbia Mathematics Teacher Scott Monuteaux as his Pre-Calculus Honors class played a “Survivor” themed review game in preparation for an upcoming quiz on Polynomials and Rational Functions.
Modeled after the reality TV show, students were placed into groups, or “tribes,” and worked collaboratively to solve a variety of math problems. Correct answers earned them the chance to vote other tribes “off the island.”
Some of the key topics we reviewed included:
- Completing the square
- Describing polynomial characteristics
- Writing polynomial functions
- Using synthetic division
Students enrolled in this class also have the opportunity to earn four college credits through Hudson Valley Community College.
“It was great to see students actively engaged, discussing strategies, and helping each other work through the problems,” said Mr. Monuteaux. “The collaborative format really encouraged peer-to-peer learning, and it was nice to hear the depth of mathematical conversation happening throughout the room.”
Congratulations to Team Green – Connor Tracy, Evelyn Jeffers, and Anthony Mancini – for winning Pre-Calculus Survivor!
