The following letter was sent to all East Greenbush CSD staff and parents/guardians on Thursday, October 31 via ParentSquare.

Dear East Greenbush CSD Community,

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we notify our school community of the death of longtime Columbia High School teacher Rich Hill. Mr. Hill passed away this morning following a medical emergency that occurred at the school.

Mr. Hill was a genuinely beloved teacher and colleague who dedicated many years of his life to serving the children of our school community. His commitment to his students and his positive impact on Columbia High School were immense, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him – students, staff, and families alike.

We understand that news of this nature can be deeply upsetting, especially for our students and Mr. Hill’s friends and colleagues. Please be assured that our priority is ensuring that our staff and students receive the immediate support they need. The Questar III BOCES Crisis Support Team was immediately mobilized, in conjunction with our district mental health staff, and is on site for the remainder of the regular school day to provide counseling and resources to anyone in need.

Columbia staff members were notified of his passing at an in-person meeting following their early dismissal today.

Information about ongoing support services and resources will be provided to all families as soon as it is available. We encourage you to speak with your child and let them know that school counselors and support staff are ready to help them process their feelings.

During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that you hold the Hill family in your thoughts. We are a strong community, and we will navigate this grief together.

Sincerely,

Kurtis Kotes
Superintendent of Schools
