The Columbia Varsity Boys’ Soccer team won the Section 2 Class AA Championship on Saturday, defeating defending champion Bethlehem 1-0 in a double overtime thriller. Senior Aidan Gatchell scored the golden goal, giving the program its third ever Sectional title.
Columbia goalkeeper Robert Rumsey and the defense kept the clean sheet.
“There’s no better feeling in the world,” Gatchell told the Times Union after the match. “Last year we fell short and to win like this. … It’s awesome. To celebrate with my teammates, my family, my brother [Columbia midfielder Matthew Gatchell] is something I’ll never forget.”
The Blue Devils (16-0-2) advance to the New York State Tournament where they will face Section III champion Fayetteville-Manlius at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School in Verona.
