Craig Lipps is the new Supervisor of Transportation for the East Greenbush CSD. In his new role he will oversee the entire transportation department ensuring the efficiency and safety of transporting students. Mr. Lipps was previously the Director of Transportation at Guilderland CSD and has 25 years of experience in school transportation.
Mr. Lipps began his career as a bus driver for the Hudson Falls Central School District in 2000. He has also served as a safety and training manager, a dispatcher, a regional general manager, and a transportation director.
We sat down with Mr. Lipps to discuss his new role and responsibilities.
Q: How’s the job going so far?
Really good. The first week I spend a lot of time observing, learning, relationship building, and figuring out where I am needed the most. I have a lot to look at and a lot to learn.
Q: What are some of your job duties?
Behind the scenes there’s a lot that goes on to make the yellow buses roll. My job is to make sure we have the equipment and staff ready to support the students, families, and teachers we serve, every day and every time. Ultimately, my responsibility is to operate an efficient and safe transportation service. Our job is to get these kids to school, ready to learn and then to graduation, sending them out into the world prepared for success.
Q: Why did you want this job?
I wanted this job because East Greenbush CSD has an excellent reputation, not just for strong academics, but for the way the district and community work together to support students. That sense of pride and collaboration really stood out to me. I was drawn to the opportunity to be part of a district where student safety, professionalism, and community relationships are taken seriously, and where staff are genuinely invested in doing what’s best for kids.
In this role, I saw a chance to contribute to a team that is well-respected, help strengthen systems that support student safety, and be part of a community that values its schools. It felt like the right place to make a positive impact.
Q: How have your career experiences prepared you for this position?
I’ve worked with several school districts over the years, here in the Capital Region, downstate and in Jacksonville, Florida, where I was responsible for transporting over 20,000 students with 262 buses and 340 employees. Over the years I’ve had a lot of training and experience.
Q: What do you enjoy about working in education?
I wake up every day and I look forward to making sure that we’re getting our students where they need to be. When I was in Kindergarten, I wanted to drive a school bus when I grew up. Later on I wanted to teach but I ended up following my childhood dream and drove a school bus for six years realizing that I could have a big impact in education in transportation. My daily goal is to make sure our students arrive at school, ready to learn and able to succeed, all 4,000 of them.
Q: Is there anything that you’re really excited about with this new position?
I’m excited to experience a new challenge, maintaining a positive, supportive culture and being part of a transportation team that stands out above the rest.
