Steve Baum speaks to Genet 5th graders during a presentation about the Holocaust

Leon Halpert, Steve Baum, and Marsha Halpert share personal stories of their parents’ experiences during the Holocaust.

Fifth-grade students at Genet Elementary School attended an important presentation on Monday afternoon as they learned more about the Holocaust prior to reading “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry, a historical fiction book that is part of the 5th grade curriculum.

The students were gathered in the school auditorium to hear from three children of Holocaust survivors – Steve Baum, Marsha Halpert, and Leon Halpert.

The presentation, given in an age-appropriate manner, featured the panelists sharing the personal stories of their parents’ experiences during the Holocaust.

Students learned about Kristallnacht, ghettos, concentration camps, and how allied forces liberated Holocaust survivors.

Despite the heartbreaking stories, there were lessons of resilience and humanity. For example, Mr. Baum told the students how his father Karl Baum was hidden with his family in a Dutch family’s attic so they would not be discovered by the Nazis. Mr. Baum traveled to Europe in recent years to meet the family who saved his father and express his gratitude.

The powerful presentation successfully enhanced the students’ knowledge of the Holocaust and World War II, leaving a lasting impression on the 5th grade class and reinforcing the school’s commitment to providing comprehensive and impactful historical education.

“It was a privilege to bring in my lovely in-laws Marsha and Leon Halpert, and Steve Baum to speak with the 5th graders at Genet,” said 5th Grade Teacher Dan Scher. “Learning about this sad time in history is crucial to fulfill the slogan ‘Never Again.’”
