Second grade students in Stephanie Gardinier’s class at Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School recently created flags through an interdisciplinary project that paired Art and English Language Arts.
The project began in the classroom where students studied symbols of freedom and the importance of government in ELA. To bring these concepts to life, students then worked in groups in the art room with Mrs. Gardinier and Art Teacher Dianne Chalavoutis to make flags using felt, scissors, glue and markers to represent what government means to them.
In the end, each group of students had created a flag using teamwork and their own artistic expressions.
