The Board of Education appointed Red Mill 5th grade teacher Brittany Harrison as the new K-12 English Language Arts and Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Coordinator during its public meeting on Wednesday.

In this pivotal dual role, Mrs. Harrison will oversee the district’s ELA curriculum as well as the comprehensive interventions offered to students. Her responsibilities will include:

  • Curriculum Alignment: Working with the ELA Department Chair and Grade Level Content Coordinators to ensure the curriculum aligns vertically and horizontally with NYS standards and assessments.
  • Teacher Support: Leading professional development and assisting staff with curriculum implementation.
  • Student Support: Leading the development of the district’s MTSS plan and collaborating with the AIS/intervention team to establish clear entrance and exit criteria for student interventions.
  • Holistic Intervention: Collaborating with administrators, counselors, and social workers to design social, emotional, and behavioral interventions.

“I have big shoes to fill after all of the wonderful progress Mrs. Mahar made while she was in this role, but I look forward to helping our ELA programs continue to grow and to be a support to the staff and students throughout the district,” said Mrs. Harrison. “I am also excited to take on the role of MTSS Coordinator for the district and to focus on work with the committee that centers around the whole learner – academically, socially and emotionally – across the district.”

Mrs. Harrison is in her 14th year with the East Greenbush Central School District.

Beyond her experience as a classroom teacher, Mrs. Harrison has also served as a K-5 Content Coordinator, helped update K-5 curriculum maps to align with Next Generation State Standards, piloted the Benchmark Advance reading program, presented the mathematics program review, and she is a member of three district-wide committees – Committee for Curriculum Study, MTSS, and Portrait of a Graduate.

“Mrs. Harrison brings a proven background in math and literacy leadership to her years of experience in East Greenbush, serving as a trusted, reliable and knowledgeable voice for our educational community,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Lisa Mahar.

Mrs. Harrison has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SUNY Plattsburgh and a master’s degree from The College of Saint Rose.
