Students from Mrs. Jennifer Carraher’s English as a New Language class recently participated in a National Geographic Explorer Classroom event, joining students from across the country for a live virtual experience titled “Animating My Memories.”

The program explored the importance of understanding and preserving stories from our past. It served as an extension of the English Language Arts unit that focused on how people can experience the same events differently, providing a real-world example of differing points of view through storytelling and cultural traditions.

During the session, students completed an interactive survey, listened to traditional nursery lullabies, and learned about African nursery rhymes shared by documentary filmmaker Manu Akatsu.

The activity also supported the district’s Portrait of a Graduate – aligning with its traits of confident learner, effective communicator, empathetic, adaptable, and critical thinker – as students listened to diverse perspectives, engaged with new ideas, and reflected on how experiences shape understanding.

“Students greatly enjoyed the experience and are excited to take part in another upcoming virtual event,” said Mrs. Carraher.
