The Columbia Boys Basketball teams gathered in the school library on Monday afternoon to focus on a different kind of teamwork: building a more inclusive community.
In partnership with Bring on the Spectrum, the student athletes and their coaches launched a two-part initiative designed to foster empathy and understanding for neurodivergent individuals.
A.D.A.P.T. Training
The initiative started on Monday after school when the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman boys’ basketball teams participated in the A.D.A.P.T. program. The workshop, which stands for Actions to Draw All People Together, moves beyond basic awareness. It is designed to equip students with the tools to foster genuine understanding and empathy for neurodivergent individuals.
Seated at tables in the school library, students watched a presentation which included videos and information. They also participated in hands-on activities to gain a deeper understanding of neurodivergent people.
“This training truly helped our basketball players understand, respect, and support people who may think, learn, and communicate differently,” said boys’ varsity basketball coach Tyler Rose. “At the high school level, students are forming strong social habits and beliefs, so this learning can have a real impact on school culture.”
Other clubs are participating in the A.D.A.P.T. Training this winter including Key Club, Empowering Student Voices (Interact Club), Devils for Inclusion, and Ambassadors Club.
“Inclusion Needs You!” Awareness Games
Following the training, the teams will put their learning into action by hosting a triple-header of “Inclusion Needs You!” awareness games on Tuesday, February 10.
Columbia will play Shaker at the following times in the Columbia gymnasium:
- Freshman Game – 4:00 p.m.
- JV Game – 5:30 p.m.
- Varsity Game – 7:00 p.m.
Representatives from Bring on the Spectrum will be in attendance to share information and resources with the crowd.
To accommodate neurodivergent fans, Columbia Athletics will be lowering the volume for music and PA announcements during the games. They will also provide a quiet viewing area in the weight room (across the hallway from the gym) with chairs and a livestream of the game.
“Working with the students this week has been incredibly impactful, and it’s been inspiring to see our student athletes engage so openly and thoughtfully in the A.D.A.P.T. session,” said Lisa Audi, co-founder and CEO of Bring on the Spectrum. “We’re excited to carry that momentum into next week’s Inclusion Needs You! games, where our teams, families, and community can come together to put inclusion into action and celebrate what it truly means to support one another—on and off the court.”
