Movie producer and executive Michael Buttiglieri recently spoke to students in Debreen Oliva’s Family and Consumer Science classes at Goff Middle School. He shared his journey of rising through the ranks of reality TV to his recent work producing Lifetime movies. Mr. Buttiglieri is currently in the Albany area scouting locations for a Christmas movie that will begin shooting this April.

During his presentation, he gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process, from the first script to post-production. He described the lengthy, grueling work of managing budgets, hiring cast and crew, and the long hours required on set to create a product that looks amazing to viewers.

He gave an inspiring talk about his lifelong dream to work in the entertainment industry and the hard work required to achieve it. Mr. Buttiglieri spoke on the qualities he values most in employees including punctuality, thinking on your feet, and a willingness to problem-solve. He also emphasized that communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others are vital for success.

The students were especially impressed by the celebrities he has worked with, including Drake, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Criss Angel, the Kardashians, and the cast of The Walking Dead. They were also surprised to hear that cell phones are strictly prohibited on set, and phones are locked up and released only at the end of the workday, with the crew communicating via walkie-talkie instead.

Students received an in-depth look at the life of a producer and learned a valuable lesson in achieving their own dreams, advocating for yourself,  and never giving up.
